Pets and people alike swarmed the B Street block between 27th and 28th Streets in Golden Hill Neighborhood when Brian's Farmers' Markets opened a fourth herbicide-free, pesticide-free and organic market.

Those wandering the booths said they were glad to be able to walk from home to pick up their week's supply of fresh produce as well as sample the convenient and unusual home-prepared foods the market showcases. Healthy salsas, fresh fish and artisan crafts also rounded out the market's offerings.

Keeping the mood jumping, bluegrass band Plow featured mandolin solos backed up by guitar and banjo.

Several Golden Hill businesses decided to use the market opportunity to make one-on-one connections with Golden Hill residents.  South Bark dog wash explained that by talking with booth visitors, they'd connected with locals who usually just walked on by their storefront on nearby 30th street.  Many residents hadn't been aware that, on top of the dog grooming South Bark Dog Wash offers, the business was also dedicated to providing healthy foods, shampoos, safe dog toys and training aids.

Smart move as the dogs were out in force at the Golden Hill location of Brian's Farmers' Markets.   From 5-pound chiuhuaha Fabio to market patron Bill's 115-lb Standard Poodle-Retriever cross, Boomer, dogs arrived in all sizes and varieties.

The only casualty reported was one sub-cutaneous blood blister inflicted upon Poppa's Fresh Fish assitant Collin Thorpe by one frest and fiesty crab.

Within ten minutes of closing time, Rivas farms had sold out every last 3-pack of strawberries and nearly all heads of chemical-free broccoli and califlower. Every vendor reported being impressed at the near-downtown turnout.

More than an opportunity to buy, the Golden Hill certified farmers' market turned into a socialization opportunity where residents stayed to chat with neighbors they rarely had a chance to see. If you live in the Golden Hill or downtown neighborhoods, come on out next Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to hob nob with shoppers like these:
